Tornado warnings in southwest Oklahoma

A series of rain showers and storms are moving through the metropolis from the south. These storms could bring hail and strong winds.

Around 7 p.m., a multi-vertex tornado was confirmed near Duke, Oklahoma. News 9 reported live on the tornado striking a home.

Current warnings and cautions in Oklahoma:

  1. Tornado Warning for Beckham, Custer, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Roger Mills, Tillman and Washita County until 11:00 p.m.
  2. Tornado warning for Harmon and Jackson County until 8:00 p.m.
  3. Tornado warning for Greer, Jackson and Tillman counties until 8:15 p.m.

What will the weather be like on Thursday?

The atmosphere is being recharged and more severe conditions are expected.

These storms, however, will bring wind and hail, and they will become more numerous in the western parts of the state, and by the evening hours they will be extending into central Oklahoma.

There is a chance of rain and storms on Thursday.

Between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., the window of opportunity for stronger storms and hailstones is larger. Wind speeds of around 96 kilometers per hour are possible then, which increases the likelihood of tornadoes.

“The storms will try to start ahead of the dry line in western Oklahoma and move northeast,” said Lacey Swope, meteorologist at News 9. “These will be swirling storms. Large hail… destructive winds, and each of them will pose a tornado threat.”

Although the chance of storms is low in the early afternoon, it increases from 30% around 7:00 p.m. to 60% around 10:00 p.m. to midnight, indicating an increasing change in intensity.

As the weather front moves east, the risk of tornadoes almost divides the state into western and eastern halves. In the west, the risk is moderate, but in the east it is low again.

Our trackers will be monitoring the increasing likelihood of severe weather on Thursday evening.

A weak cold front will arrive later this evening and may bring some showers and light thunderstorms early Friday morning.

What will the weather be like for the rest of the week?

On Friday the weather will calm down considerably with highs around 27 degrees, the afternoon will look mostly dry and only in the southeastern parts of the state there is a slight risk of storms.

Storms are expected again on Saturday, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather on that day as well.
