How will the new NBA TV deal affect Inside the NBA?

In 2025, watching NBA games from home could look very different.

Earlier this week, Sports Business JournalTom Friend of the NBA reported that the NBA is in the process of negotiating a new TV deal with Disney (ESPN’s parent company), new partner Amazon and NBC – a former broadcast partner and home of the “NBA on NBC' in the 1990s and early 2000s.

If the new TV deal is finalized, Warner Bros. Discovery (owner of TNT) will stop broadcasting NBA games after the 2024-25 season, meaning that the popular Insights into the NBA Program could end.

What would a new contract mean for Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny “The Jet” Smith?

To lift the curtain on the negotiations, Friend The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross on Friday to analyze the status of NBA TV negotiations, predict when an announcement might be made, and consider where Insights into the NBA could land if TNT loses the broadcasting rights:

Topics: NBA TV deal & the future of Insights into the NBA

  • Is it a foregone conclusion that TNT's broadcast of NBA games will end?
  • “I'd say that's still pretty far away… They're going to make a desperate attempt here.”
  • TNT will end its broadcast of the Western Conference Finals, after which the news will become more public
  • Friend says TNT believes they can beat the offer dollar for dollar, but that's not what this deal is about.
  • Did TNT lose its influence in this deal?
  • Those responsible at Turner Sports do not want to be responsible for the death of Insights into the NBA
  • “Sometime [TNT] will outbid…. That's the only scenario where Turner has a chance.”
  • Friend says Turner will have to get creative to keep up with NBC's offering
  • Does Insights into the NBA earn enough money to influence that decision?
  • “The reason the show is worth money and valuable is because they are themselves on this show… The people at ESPN are not themselves; they try to be know-it-alls, and that turns you off. That's what makes this show so special.”
  • Freund believes Amazon could try Insights into the NBA in this new deal
  • Could hold TNT Insights into the NBA continue even if they lost the broadcasting rights for the game?

More on the NBA-NBC deal

From the 1990s to the early 2000s, NBA playoff basketball went hand in hand with the sound of John Tesh’s “Roundball Rock,” the theme song of NBC broadcasts –The NBA on NBC.

The NBA on NBC was the broadcast home of basketball during a transitional period, when the sport's popularity grew thanks to the duels between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson in the 1980s and the emergence of a young star named Michael Jordan.

From 1990 to 2002, NBC led NBA coverage before losing the broadcast rights in 2003 to a network package that included ABC, ESPN and TNT.

Over 20 years later, “Roundball Rock” seems to be on the verge of an official return to the National Basketball Association.

According to a report by Wall Street diary On April 29, NBC plans to pay $2.5 billion annually to broadcast a package of NBA games, doubling its current $1.2 billion annual contract with TNT parent company Warner Brothers.

Friends' report indicates that unless WBD increases its bid to $2.8 billion, NBC will win the rights to broadcast NBA games for the first time since 2002.

Part of the NBA on NBC partnership would be Basketball Night in Americasimilar to the station’s Sunday night coverage of the NFL, Football night in America.

Negotiations are ongoing – and lawsuits may loom – but the NBA's three-decade run on TNT could end after the 2024-25 season.
