Film review – Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Reading time:2 minutes, 39 seconds

It may take George Miller nearly a decade to release a film, but when he does, he doesn't disappoint. I really can't believe it. Mad Max: Fury Road was published in 2015. Where are the decades?

Everything you would expect

When I think of George Miller, the first things that come to mind are the visual effects and the cinematography. Both are excellent in this film. Cinematography is a team effort, so it's not fair to give Miller all the credit, except that he is also the director and producer, so he hired the people to do the camera work and then directed it. The result is Miller's typical result. You can't ask for more than that.

I don’t like to describe things as perfect because there is always room for improvement. That is, if this script is not perfect, it is asymptotically close.

Acting

Anya Taylor-Joy is great, of course. Her role requires a lot of expression, and she nailed it perfectly. She neither overplayed nor underplayed her emotional expressions. And that's a fine line. What really surprised me was the demanding role Chris Hemsworth had and how great he was in it. I've never thought Chris was a bad actor. Sure, he's been in a few movies that weren't exactly brilliantly written and directed, and he did it quite well. But dramatic acting wasn't something I expected from him. He has his Thor in the MCU. I don't think he has to do much acting to be Thor now because he knows the character so well. Going into the movie, one of the things I was most excited about was Chris' performance. He was beyond impressive, especially considering his character had to deliver a lot of really dense dialogue, especially at the end of the movie. I definitely have a new respect for Chris.

Story

With a running time of about 2 hours and 18 minutes (not including credits), this is a fairly long film, but it never drags or feels overly bloated. Sure, some of the action scenes could have been half as long and still worked, but I think the length of the action helps because Miller doesn't have an action scene just for the sake of spectacle, of which there are plenty. He also tells the story during the action scenes. Something few writers do well. All in all, I wouldn't choose to cut a minute off of this running time.

Class: A

About The Peetimes: The final peetime is by far the best of all. It consists mostly of car rides and desert scenes. None of the peetimes contain any action. I had a few issues with my timer app. I believe the start/end of the peetime are correct, but I'm not sure.

There Are additional scenes during or after the credits of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
