Josh Kerr breaks the 39-year-old national record with his victory in the Diamond League mile race

The Scottish runner won a highly anticipated showdown with Norwegian rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen thanks to a remarkable run of 3:45.34, a world best.

Cram held the British record since 1985 with a time of 3:46.32 minutes.

Olympic 1500m champion Ingebrigtsen, who was surprised by Kerr in this event at last year's World Championships in Budapest, finished second. Britons Neil Gourley and Jake Wightman finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Previously, Keely Hodgkinson had won the women’s 800 m with a dominant performance.

The 22-year-old achieved the world's best time with a time of 1 minute 55.78 seconds, while her compatriot Jemma Reekie came third with a time of 1 minute 57.45 seconds – behind Kenyan Mary Moraa.

Sprinter Dina Asher-Smith finished third in the women's 100m with her season's best time of 10.98 seconds.

Compatriot Daryll Neita finished fourth with a time of 11 seconds, while American Sha'Carri Richardson (10.83 seconds) took the win ahead of Julien Alfred (10.93 seconds) from St. Lucia.

Laura Muir continued her preparations for the Summer Olympics in Paris with a fourth place in the women's 1500 m and her season's best time of 3 minutes, 56.35 seconds.

The Tokyo 2020 silver medallist said: “I want to be in the best possible shape in August. Running 56 (seconds) in May is a step in that direction. It's very promising.”

Elsewhere, Kenyan Beatrice Chebet set a new world record of 28 minutes and 54.14 seconds to win the women's 10,000 m.
