Holes found in black screen blocking viral Fuji photo ad

Holes have been discovered in a large black wall that a city in central Japan had erected to block the view of Mount Fuji, the city announced on Tuesday. There had previously been criticism of the behavior of tourists at the viral photo spot.

After the screen was put up on May 21 to prevent a crowd of visitors at the site in front of a Lawson supermarket in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, the city confirmed the first hole the following day; since then, the number has risen to around 10.

“We thought this might happen someday, but not so soon,” a city official said.

The city plans to repair the screen immediately and at the same time put up a notice asking visitors not to touch it.

The city initially deployed security guards and posted warning signs in English after receiving complaints from locals about an increase in the number of tourists running red lights and parking their vehicles illegally in the area.

However, when the city realized that the measures did not significantly improve the situation, it decided to install the screen.
