What we know about Marvel's new X-Men movie

After a long wait and a behind-the-scenes legal battle, Marvel's X-Men movie is now officially on the way and various mutants are already making their presence known in the MCU.

The X-Men are one of Marvel's largest product lines and consist of complex characters who have already earned a solid fan base through their adventures on the comic pages, in cartoons and even in feature films.

However, they were under the watchful eye of 20th Century Fox for most of their on-screen appearances and were unable to fully interact in Kevin Feige's ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That changed in 2019 when Disney acquired Fox and gave the company free rein to play around with Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops and the rest of Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

So what exactly do they have planned? Here's what we know so far…

There is currently no confirmed release date for Marvel's X-Men movie, and since the project is still in the early stages of production, not even Professor X himself could predict when it might be released.

However, promising developments regarding the creative team suggest that it is being worked on, so perhaps we will see what they have cooked up sometime in 2026 or so.

No, there is no trailer for Marvel's X-Men movie yet. Until the script is finished and the cameras are rolling, we won't see any glimpses of the MCU's new Wolverine in action.

The plot of the Marvel X-Men film is still a secret for now, but according to numerous reports, the studio's new film marks the beginning of a complete mutant makeover.

The search for a writer for the project began in late 2023, after the strikes in Hollywood ended. Marvel reportedly met with various screenwriters for the job. Ultimately, it was Michael Lesslie, author of The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, who got the coveted job.

Much like the sprawling X-Men universe, this film featured an ensemble cast, making Lesslie ideally suited to handle a whole school of colorful new characters.

Currently, neither a director nor stars have been found for the project, so it will be quite a while before it sees the light of day.

It's also unclear how the film will fit into the MCU's broader dealings with mutants. Various X-Men characters have appeared in Marvel films and TV shows over the past few years – from Evan Peters' fan-favorite speedster Quicksilver appearing in WandaVision to Kelsey Grammer's Beast making a splash in the end-credits sequence of The Marvels to the upcoming return of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Wolverine.

Additionally, Patrick Stewart's iconic Professor Charles Xavier made a memorable cameo in Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, and the hit animated series X-Men 97 saw the return of many beloved X-Men in a standalone timeline.

Maybe we'll see some familiar faces, maybe not. Since this is arguably Marvel's most popular intellectual property, Feige will likely want to use this film to introduce us to characters who can lead films and spin-offs in the years to come, a task that's undoubtedly best left to new talent.

Marvel's X-Men movie is coming soon.
