Video of Pune police officer getting massage during ‘Nakabandi’ goes viral; high blood sugar level, DCP explains

Pune: A video showing a traffic cop in Pune getting a leg massage from an unidentified youth went viral on social media, even as a senior official on Sunday said it was due to the policeman's health condition.

The video shows the traffic policeman sitting on a chair while the teenager massages his leg.

Those who shared the video on social media said it was from a nakabandi (police checkpoint) in Kalyani Nagar, the site of the May 19 Porsche accident involving a suspected drunk underage driver.

Two IT experts were killed in the accident. The accident sparked nationwide outrage as attempts were made to absolve the accused of responsibility, including switching blood samples taken during tests to determine alcohol consumption.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rohidas Pawar, in a message, clarified the viral video and said, “Sub-Inspector Gorade (57) of Yerwada Traffic Department was posted for drunk driving at Adlabs Chowk in Kalyaninagar.”

The DCP said that due to continuous day and night duty for two days, Gorade's blood sugar level reached 550 (mg/dl or milligrams per decilitre), after which he developed cramps in his legs.

“Hence, he suddenly sat down on the ground. The person in the footage helped to relieve the cramps in his leg. We are still verifying the facts and will take necessary action,” the DCP added in the message.
