Orba's newly launched Diem urban e-bike has already received a number of awards, including iF Design and Red Dot awards for its sleek, diamond-shaped frame with integrated lighting system.

The Spanish bicycle manufacturer has over 180 years of experience in mass production, with the first half of its career dedicated to the manufacture of firearms. It was not until 1931 that the Basque company turned to building bicycles. In fact, the company became so closely associated with racing bicycles that the Vuelta a España space race began in the factory.

Worker-owned since the late '60s, Orbea builds a wide range of bikes with a high level of customization and personalization. Aimed at commuter use, the Diem has a relatively lightweight frame and components, although it includes a 540Wh or 630Wh battery that provides a range of around 120km or 150km, respectively.

The company has applied its many years of experience building high-performance bikes to this electric model, maintaining the same design and quality of components to keep weight down and make the Diem as streamlined and efficient as possible.

A key feature is the integrated beacons, which are integrated into the frame just below the handlebars, improving visibility both day and night. The aluminum tubular frame is hydroformed to make the most of the material, and the polished welds give the frame a smooth, seamless look.

Add to that wide all-terrain tires for any type of city road and a special “Spin Block” system that stops the handlebars from rotating completely, making the bike more stable when parked. There are brake lights at the rear, as well as a choice of front and rear carrier systems and an adapter that's compatible with a number of leading third-party manufacturers.

The drive is provided by a Shimano electric motor with multi-stage support, and there is also a dedicated app, a mount and an integrated USB-C socket on the top tube.

All city bikes need good security systems and in addition to the integrated lighting that deters opportunistic thieves, Orbea has provided a special opening in the frame where a tracker such as an Apple AirTag can be hidden.

The Diem is available in three colours, Ivory White, Glitter Anthracite and Spaceship Green, and frame sizes range from S to XL. In addition to optional rack and carrier systems, there is also a choice of handlebar, light intensity and seat post, making this model fully customisable and complementing the growing range of sought-after e-bikes.
