  • Paul Reubens bought his house in Los Feliz for $415,000 with the earnings from “Pee-wee's Big Adventure.”

  • Now, a year after his death from cancer, the property is for sale for $4.995 million.

  • Built in 1957, this mid-century modern home offers stunning views of LA and the Hollywood Hills.

You might not want to get involved with a guy like him, but legendary maverick comedian Paul Reubens had great taste.

In 1985, Reubens bought his estate in California's Hollywood Hills for $415,000, using earnings from his role as the title character in “Pee-wee's Big Adventure,” his personal assistant and trustee Allison Berry told the Wall Street Journal.

Now, a year after his death from cancer, his Los Feliz home has hit the market with a list price of $4.995 million. The property features stunning views, whimsical wallpaper, a custom cat enclosure Reuben built for his feline friends, and a tribute to the role that made him a household name.

Take a look inside.

Embedded At the end of a private road in The Oaks neighborhood of Los Feliz, real estate agent Juliette Hohnen of Douglas Elliman calls the offering “a trophy property in the making.”

Built in 1957, the property features timeless architecture and vintage wallpaper.

The 1.4-acre property is on the market for the first time in nearly 40 years and offers 360-degree views of Los Angeles and the surrounding canyons, including the Griffith Park Observatory and the Hollywood Sign.

“It was fate for him because he loved the '50s,” Berry told the Journal.

The study has a bar and a fireplace.

The home is a classic three-bedroom, three-bathroom, mid-century single-story ranch house with sliding doors that open to the patio with pool and spa, as well as a cozy den with a built-in bar and fireplace.

The kitchen offers panoramic views and overlooks the nearby hills.

The master suite includes a dressing area with built-in vanity, a sitting room and a bathroom that opens onto an enclosed cat patio, or “catio,” that Reubens built for his feline friends.

Reuben's cat enclosure was specifically built to protect his cats from wildlife in the Hollywood Hills.

Berry told the Journal that Reubens built the cat enclosure to protect his cat, Koko, from wildlife in the area and decorated the walls with seashells from his hometown of Sarasota, Florida.

Reubens later adopted three more cats, Sam, Hugo and Henry, who enjoyed climbing around the jungle gym for years, Berry told the outlet.

The house is decorated with vintage wallpaper that Reubens collected.

Two guest bedrooms share a Jack-and-Jill bathroom in timeless 1950s style.

“For him, it was about restoring the house and keeping it as true to its original concept as possible,” Berry told the Journal. “And he just loved the opportunity to put up this vintage wallpaper that he had kept.”

Reubens was a regular host at the estate, hosting parties for famous friends.

Each guest room offers exceptional views of the surrounding hills. Reubens regularly hosted parties and dinners for his friends, including “Goodfellas” actress Debi Mazar and “Scream” actor David Arquette.

Reubens and Mazar's signed handprints are still engraved in the concrete near the pool and hot tub outside, Berry told the Journal.

Outside, in the middle of Reuben's precious garden, stands an obvious tribute to Pee-Wee Herman.

Reubens planted a cactus garden as well as guava and persimmon trees on the property, Berry told the Journal. The property features “park-like amenities,” according to Hohnen, with walking trails, lush wildlife and an obvious homage to Pee-wee's iconic red Schwinn DX Cruiser.
