Tour this tranquil, elegant Aspen home that combines art and nature

Perched quietly on a hill overlooking a high alpine valley in Colorado, N'Vitale is an Aspen home that is also the latest completed project by CCY Architects. The Rocky Mountain-based design studio is accustomed to considering the dramatic landscape of its surroundings to create projects that take advantage of the view, and this latest project is no exception. With panoramic views across its six-acre property, it overlooks a dense evergreen forest to the south, a landscape of native Gambel oaks to the north, and an aspen grove in between. It's a wonderful property designed to embrace the surrounding beauty.

Enter N'Vitale, a quietly elegant home in Aspen

The home was designed for an art-loving couple who wanted a personal display space for their collection of paintings, photography and sculpture in this mountain retreat. Although it is primarily a residence, the interconnected sections of the building also provide a tranquil gallery space, adding to its overall contemporary feel.

The design studio took note of the clients' desire that the residence reflect the rich diversity of the site, where roaming foxes, black bears, elk and mule deer are not uncommon.

With access to ski slopes and convenient proximity to town, the residence is a comfortable retreat with a pool, gym and spa treatment room.

The main structure of the house and its guest wing consists of a weathered steel box enclosing a glass pavilion and a gentle wing roof, the latter giving the house a low presence on the land and playing with the light that filters through the living spaces.

The use of both transparent and opaque materials offers a playful interpretation of indoor-outdoor living, creating a cozy, private interior during the cold winter season, while the large windows that frame the expansive evergreen forest still allow movement from nature to come in.

To further highlight the client's art collection, the house was designed to have appropriate lighting to provide small display opportunities, while the entry axis is cleverly aligned with an outdoor sculpture. The owners view this house as a lasting legacy that they and their children will enjoy.

With this in mind, sustainable architectural principles are also at the core of the design. Passive ventilation is a priority, as are solar panels to offset the home's energy consumption. The garage is equipped with electric car chargers and all appliances are high power consumers.

Combining clean and comfortable contemporary design with respect for the surrounding nature, this Aspen home will undoubtedly bring joy to the builders and their families for generations to come.
