Man arrested after hours-long standoff at Canterbury Green Apartments

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A 26-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning following a domestic altercation and subsequent standoff with police at a north side apartment complex, police said.

Detectives with the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) said a woman texted 911 for help during a domestic dispute around 4:40 a.m. Police said they worked with dispatch to track down the woman's whereabouts and located her at an apartment on Canterbury Green near St. Joe Road.

Officers said they found the woman's apartment and safely escorted her outside along with a child. They said the woman was being held in the apartment against her will by 26-year-old Tavon Malik Underwood.

Once the woman and child were outside, investigators found Underwood was still inside with other adults. Underwood had an outstanding warrant for probation violation and possession of a drug stemming from another investigation.

After a nearly four-hour standoff involving the FWPD's Crisis Response Team and Air Support Unit, police were able to get Tavon to leave the apartment.

Based on the arrest warrant, he was arrested and also charged with deprivation of liberty.
