Generation Z employee makes headlines for refusing to complete a 90-minute task that was ‘a lot of work’

A Gen Z candidate has caused a stir online after refusing to complete a task during the hiring process, saying it “looked like too much work.”

In a viral post, an employee shared his frustration after making it clear that he was not willing to participate in the Excel exercise.

The unnamed person was not satisfied with this because he “did not know where he stood in the process” and was therefore not prepared to invest the time required for this.

From the employer's perspective, a viral post was posted that garnered nearly eight million views.

It said: “Me: I really enjoyed the interview. Please take a look at the attached financial modeling test.

“Generation Z applicants: That looks like a lot of work. Without knowing where I am in the process, I'm not willing to spend 90 minutes in Excel.

“Me: … well … I can tell you where you stand now.”

The tweet sparked a debate on the internet and many accused the Generation Z candidate of laziness.

“As someone who currently teaches Generation Z, this is unfortunately not surprising,” wrote one.

Another said: “I couldn’t have given you a better signal.”

“We require applicants to take a one-hour graphic design test.

“When people raise concerns about conducting an unpaid test, it's the best feeling in the world because I know we dodged a bullet.”

Others, however, defended the complainant.

One wrote: “So they didn't want to give up their time for nothing for a job they didn't even know if they would get, and that's why you excluded them?

“Capitalism is dark.”

Another said, “The boy is not wrong just because we have accepted this behavior from baby boomer employers our entire lives.”

One added: “To be fair, many places simply use applicants as free labor. The job doesn't exist. The 'test' is the only work they want done.”
