A man's attempt to avoid walking on rainbow steps goes viral because… oh boy

A video showing a man trying hard not to step on rainbow steps has gone viral.

It is not known when the video was shot, but the location given was the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia. Photos of the steps were posted shortly before the last Mardi Gras in Sydney.

Instead of climbing the steps, he pulls himself up using the central railing that runs down the middle. However, when his crotch slid along the railing and his rear end stuck up in the air, many questioned his method.

One X user re-shared the video, saying, “This is literally the gayest thing he could have done in this situation.”

The tweet received over 380,000 likes and 12 million views.

Some pointed out that there was a much easier way to climb the stairs, namely by climbing the wall on one side.

Others were simply incredulous.

Others online have speculated that the person might actually be gay and participating in a TikTok trend where they behave in a cartoonishly homophobic manner. If this is true, we applaud his convincing portrayal of a homophobic jerk.

UNSW released photos of the newly painted steps in February, and even then some commentators said they would do anything to avoid this happening.

Unfortunately, social media provides further examples of men trying to avoid the rainbow steps.

Rainbow Meltdown

Although the UNSW viral video is likely a skit, rainbows can evoke deeply emotional reactions in some people. We recently reported on Russian authorities cancelling a My Little Pony convention because one of the characters has a rainbow mane.

Meanwhile, in London last month, a Christian group launched a petition to stop authorities from displaying conspicuous Progress Pride flags on high streets during Pride Month.

At the time of writing, the petition is unlikely to have any impact on the city's plans.
