Casa Yuma Hotel, Puerto Escondido: a peaceful oasis by the sea

Time stands still at Casa Yuma, a new boutique hotel in the Mexican municipality of Puerto Escondido. Just minutes from Los Naranjos Beach and the lively village of La Punta, the seaside retreat is as peaceful as the sea breeze and gentle waves of its surroundings. To get there, as co-founders Sara Skalli, Camille Lambert and Tim de Belloy note, one must cross “peaceful fields where cows and horses live.” All in all, Casa Yuma is a wild escape that offers the best of both: invigorating seaside living and rural privacy.

Designed to blend into its surroundings, architect Ricardo de La Concha with Studio TAAC incorporated the Mexican native material Chukum, a plant-based concrete handcrafted from tree resin and limestone, into the heart of the construction, reinforcing the project's eco-friendly credentials. Wood, Oaxacan bricks and cement further contributed to the organic aesthetic presented by Casa Yuma. “Casa Yuma aims to offer much more than a simple stay; it aims at a total immersion in nature without sacrificing comfort,” all three co-founders explain to Wallpaper*.

Inside, the tranquility and authenticity of the exterior continues. Each of the 25 available rooms, all on one level, offers stunning views of the sea and mountains. The rooms are decorated in clean, natural tones and feature furnishings made in collaboration with local artisans, such as select ceramic lamps signed by ceramicist Amande Haeghen. Other furniture and decorative elements, hand-picked by Sara Skalli, who also served as interior designer, are intended to reflect Mexican culture in the best possible way and “offer visitors an atmosphere that is as authentic as it is warm.”

The restaurant, open to the public, faces the Pacific Ocean and is designed in the same architectural style as the hotel. It can accommodate up to 50 guests for lunch and dinner. The menu features traditional family cuisine from the Oaxaca region, such as tamales, a regional favorite made of corn dough and a spicy filling, the fresh catch of the day with an authentic mole sauce, or an absolute favorite, shrimp tacos. The open kitchen also features a tortilla oven, a cornerstone of Mexican gastronomy.

All guests have access to a swimming pool overlooking the ocean, as well as special wellness activities such as yoga, meditation and traditional massages. “The motto of this project is simple: to offer an unforgettable experience to everyone who enters the doors of Casa Yuma,” affirms Skalli.
