Shooting in Monrovia: Arrest after father of six shot dead outside his home

MONROVIA, Calif. (KABC) – An arrest was made on Wednesday after a father of six children was shot dead outside his home in Monrovia.

According to authorities, 38-year-old Nicolas Gandara was shot dead on Sunday evening after an altercation with the suspect.

“He was a great guy. My kids miss him so much and I can see the pain in their eyes,” Gandara's wife, Darlene Sarti, told Eyewitness News.

Gandara and Sarti were married for 14 years. Just two months ago they had their sixth child – a girl.

“He was a great father and a great provider,” Sarti said. “He did everything he could to make sure we were OK.”

Sarti said the man who shot her husband lived just steps away in a troubled homeless camp.

“We were so good that it destroyed something so perfect, and then it was taken away by someone who doesn't care. He came and destroyed everything we had worked so hard for,” Sarti said, fighting back tears.

Christopher Wiggan, 42, was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on murder charges. Investigators said he was a local man who lived in the area.

The suspect was involved in an argument and Gandara was trying to keep the peace when he was shot, investigators said.

Sarti's sister-in-law has set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses and assist the family.

Gandara was the sole breadwinner of the family and had two jobs as a social media manager and truck driver.

“I think he would want me to get out of here,” Sarti said. “He would want me to move somewhere where he feels I'm safe, because I feel like with everything that's happened, he's just been trying to protect us.”

She also wants the city, county and legislators to do what her husband was trying to do when he died: keep his family safe.

“I want the homeless problem to be solved,” Sarti said. “People should be able to feel safe.”

Sarti said the couple's 6-year-old daughter also graduated from kindergarten on Wednesday – one of many milestones they will celebrate without Gandara.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Sheriff's Department.
