Australian social media ‘idiot’ warns: Viral video of car jumping could result in $3,000 fine

A Gold Coast cliff diver who posts his death-defying stunts on social media has been branded an “idiot” by a local councillor and warned by Queensland Police that his antics could result in a hefty fine. The man, who did not want to be named by the media, recently uploaded a video of himself jumping from the roof of a car into the notoriously shallow waters beneath the Currumbin Bridge.

The wild feat, which the daredevil and his pals filmed with multiple cameras as he plunged 13 metres into the water, could result in a $3,000 fine and possibly even a prison sentence, according to police. The man, who goes by the pseudonym “Mad Jonny” online, said his stunts were “a calculated risk”.

“I know it's dangerous and things can go wrong,” he told the media, but added that he knows his “own abilities.”

His full identity is reportedly unknown to authorities, although they are aware of and have condemned the footage shared on social media and still available online. One local Gold Coast councillor, Gail O'Neill, certainly did not find the whole thing funny.

“What an idiot – there's something wrong with that guy,” she told 9News.

According to unconfirmed reports, the cliff diver is a young teenager, just 14 years old.

In a statement to Yahoo News Australia, Gold Coast District Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles warned that the offence could theoretically result in a one-year jail sentence or a fine of around $3,000.

“Police are aware of this incident and are asking anyone with information or relevant dashcam footage to come forward,” he said. “Carrying out such high-risk activities is a serious criminal offence and can result in significant penalties for the individuals carrying out the activity and the driver of the vehicle involved.”

“The police strongly advise against attempting such stunts. These actions not only endanger the life of the individual, but also that of others – the thrill is not worth the possible consequences.”

Superintendent Knowles added that the driver could also face charges if it turns out he was involved in the stunt.

On social media, Mad Jonny's videos have now been viewed thousands of times and sparked a flood of reactions, with some asking if he was “looking for boats down below” while others asked if he was worried “if there's something in the water?”

A Queensland Transport and Main Roads spokesman said they were trying to crack down on illegal bridge jumping at the Currumbin and Tallebudgera Creek bridges.

“Safety is of paramount importance. It is extremely disappointing that people continue to put their lives and the lives of others at risk by jumping from the Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creek bridges,” they told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

The young cliff diver from Queensland admitted he is “probably addicted to pushing his limits,” but he insists his stunts are done “with a lot of preparation and under the supervision of a lot of people.” Speaking anonymously to several media outlets, the man dismissed claims his actions were dangerous.

However, the caption to the video on Instagram reads: “Do not attempt this alone. This is a high risk activity and I would not recommend it to anyone as you will be very poorly insured or could even die!”
