Bail hearing for two defendants in connection with the fatal shooting of Hemingway

WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – A man and woman accused in a 2023 shooting that left a man from the Hemingway family pen dead appeared before a Williamsburg County bail court judge Thursday.

The judge denied bail for Shane Singletary. He is charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, first-degree burglary, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and five counts of armed robbery. The judge set bail at $100,000 for Ariyan Pickett. He is charged with aiding and abetting murder, aiding and abetting murder after the fact, criminal conspiracy, first-degree burglary and five counts of armed robbery.

According to prosecutors, Singletary and Pickett were two of four people who went to a home on Chair Road to rob 24-year-old Jaquan Julious in September 2023. Investigators say Julious was shot before the group left the house that night, prompting his family members to advocate for gun violence education.

“I wish they had thought about their families. They had thought about their children. Maybe they wouldn't have gone through with their plan,” said Julious' aunt Kimberly Williams. “But they only thought about themselves, and their selfishness caused tremendous damage to my family. But I guess they don't think it hurt us enough. Because here we are reliving that night.”

The judge decided that a new court date would be scheduled before the end of the year.
