Chiefs' BJ Thompson remains “unconscious” but stable after cardiac arrest during team meeting

Kansas City Chiefs Defensive end BJ Thompson remains “unconscious” but “stable,” according to his agent, after the second-year player suffered a seizure and cardiac arrest during a team meeting on Thursday.

Thompson's agent, Chris Turnage, gave an update on the NFL Networks Tom Pelissero after visiting him in the hospital.

“BJ is still unconscious at this time, but he is stable and his vital signs are good,” Turnage said late Thursday night. “His family asks for your continued prayers.”

The medical emergency occurred during the Chiefs' final OTA practice.

Thompson, 25, reportedly went into cardiac arrest after suffering a seizure during a special teams meeting at the Chiefs' training facility. He was immediately treated by trainers and medical staff before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Players were reportedly sent home on Thursday. A team spokesperson told the Associated Press that the final OTA session was postponed until Friday. Head coach Andy Reid is expected to comment on the situation during media availability on Friday.

CHIEFS' BJ THOMPSON SUFFERS CARDIAC ARREST DURING TEAM MEETING: REPORTS

During a charity softball game in Kansas City later that day, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke briefly about Thompson's condition.

“Let me say this before I say anything. I'm thinking about BJ right now,” Spagnuolo said via FOX 4 Kansas City. “It was scary. I think the guys were a little scared, I know I was. But a lot of praying and [head athletic trainer] Rick [Burkholder] and his staff did a great job.”

Spagnuolo said he was not in the hall, but praised the work of the coaches on site.

Thompson was drafted by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2023 draft. In his rookie season, he played one game against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 18, where he recorded two tackles.
