Rob Lowe explains his viral NFL hat that spawned thousands of memes: “I support the shield”

In the current edition of his podcast, SiriusXMs Literally with Rob LoweThe St. Elmo's Fire Alum said he accidentally created a meme in January 2020 when he showed up at a game wearing a headgear that featured not a team logo but a generic NFL shield. The internet quickly turned it into something that hasn't gone away.

“It was just a happy coincidence,” he told his guest, son Matthew Lowe. “I just picked this hat, and I think it's a cool hat.”

So, yes, like Lowe's Parks and Recreation Character would say he literally want it.

Father and son were guests at the game – Rob was supposed to promote his show 9-1-1: Lone Star – and was offered a hat. His choices were: a 49ers hat, an NFC Championship Game hat, a Packers hat, and… the NFL shield logo.

“I don't remember what your motivation was, other than you wanted to remain somewhat neutral and,” Matthew confirmed, “you thought it would be cool.”

When the cameras panned to Lowe as planned, the online posts began.

The Brat Packer said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told him it was “the most widespread viral meme in NFL history.”

Looking back, Matthew says, he already knew when something was happening.

The younger Lowe recalled, “I remember our phones going 'Zzzz' more than usual because, you know, look. The two of us go to a lot of sporting events together. We're huge Dodgers fans, so we go all the time and, you know, sometimes it switches to us, but this was different than anything else. I was like, 'What's going on now?' And then the meme came from Rob Lowe, who remains neutral.”

His father didn’t seem to mind at all and reiterated: “I support the shield.”

Oh, we know, Rob.
