Michigan man receives learner's permit after viral case

A man from Michigan recently received his learner’s permit after a lengthy legal process.

Corey Harris, 44, first made headlines when he appeared via Zoom on May 15 while driving to a court hearing in a suspended license case. Harris then returned to court, where a judge announced that he had never held a driver's license.

After the May 15 hearing, Judge Cedric Simpson ordered Harris to remain in Washtenaw County Jail, where he spent two days, USA Today reported.

The case took a turn when Saginaw County court records showed that a Saginaw County Friend of the Court judge ordered Harris' driver's license suspension to be lifted in January 2022 after a child support case was settled.

Simpson and others in the courtroom, however, were unaware of the suspension being lifted because the Michigan Secretary of State's office never received approval from the Saginaw County Friend of the Court two years ago, WXYZ-TV reported. The Michigan Secretary of State's office told USA TODAY on June 5 that Harris did not follow proper procedure to lift his driver's license suspension.

According to USA Today, Simpson revealed at a hearing on June 5 that Harris had never had a driver's license, only an identification card, and that there was a warrant out for his arrest.

“(Harris) has never had a license in the other 49 states and Commonwealths that make up this great union,” Simpson said during the hearing. “He has never had a license.”

Harris was arrested after the June 5 hearing and returned to the Washtenaw County Jail on a warrant related to a 2015 driver's license suspension, USA Today reported.

Simpson's announcement during the hearing surprised many, even Harris' new attorney Dionne Webster-Cox, who said she was “shocked,” according to WXYZ-TV.

“This should be a lesson to all of us,” Webster-Cox told the television station. “Mind your business. And at the end of the day, mind your business.”

As People reported, Harris received his learner's permit on Friday at the Michigan Secretary of State's office.
