Lithuanian President Nauseda calls on peace summit participants to support Russian war crimes tribunal

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda called on the participants of the peace summit to participate in the establishment of a special international tribunal for the Russian crime of aggression against Ukraine, ArmyInform reported.

On June 15, Ukraine opened the World Peace Summit in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. The aim of the summit is to develop a strategy to end the Russian war. Over 90 countries, including European states, India, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, are taking part in the event.

“Russia must completely stop its aggression and undoubtedly withdraw all its troops and military equipment from Ukraine,” the Lithuanian President stressed at the summit.

Nausėda stressed that holding Russia accountable for its crimes is essential to achieving peace in Ukraine.

“A just peace is not possible without holding Russia accountable for its crimes. This must be done in accordance with the UN Charter. To ensure this, we want to set up a special international tribunal,” he explained.

Discussions on a special tribunal for the crime of aggression have been ongoing since 2022, but there has been no practical progress on this issue for a long time, as Ukraine supports the creation of an international tribunal (i.e. based on an international organization), while key Western allies prefer a so-called hybrid format (where the tribunal sits under Ukrainian law but with the support of international partners).

The seventh point of President Zelensky's peace formula deals specifically with the just punishment of the aggressor states, which includes the establishment of a special tribunal.
