A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed outside the Market Basket in Lynn on Saturday night, police said.

Police arrived at the Federal Street grocery store shortly after 9 p.m. and found the boy in his car with a gunshot wound, Lynn police said. The 17-year-old, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Salem Hospital, where he died.

Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker told reporters Sunday that the 17-year-old's vehicle was hit by several gunshots, causing it to roll into a ravine and bushes.

Lynn police, who work with Massachusetts State Police, said the incident was not random. Tucker said the 17-year-old was the target.

“It was a very busy night, and unfortunately two very good communities were hit by gun violence,” Tucker said, referring to a shooting in Methuen. “We are doing everything we can to bring those responsible to justice.”

According to authorities, there is no connection between the two shootings.

Lynn Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 781-595-2000 or email [email protected].
