Today is Kate Middleton's 42nd birthday, and while the Princess of Wales is keeping her celebrations more intimate—the Queen's usual practice not only on her cake day, but also in early January when her children are on school holidays—her fans are celebrating all over social media. One video in particular, highlighting Kate's life before the royal years, has garnered more than 4.5 million views on TikTok, proving that she's always been an It Girl and that all eyes were on her even before she became the Duchess of Cambridge.

“Kate Middleton before royal life (lots of partying with William),” wrote fan account @jusst_tiktokss alongside a montage to a very upbeat remix of ABBA's “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).”

The video loops images of Kate wearing sequins, dancing with William in a club and going to a roller disco with her sister Pippa. The images date back to 2008, which may explain why Kate is wearing UGG boots, which dominated the scene at the time (and are still popular).

Commenters cheered, writing things like, “Kate is enjoying her youth and is an adult now, so she's obviously matured” and “They had the best days of their lives. Just like every one of us here did during college.”

Although she appears outgoing and enjoys every minute of her social life, Kate reflected on her shyness after her engagement to Prince William in 2010. The two met at the University of St Andrew's and were together for almost a decade before William proposed.

“I think you said I turned bright red when I met you and then scurried away,” she told William during their engagement interview in 2010. “[I was] I'm very shy to meet you.”

“We were friends for over a year,” William added. “It just blossomed from there.” [We] realized that we had the same interests. [We] I just had a really good time.”
