A man's interesting interpretation of the viral “man or bear” trend is well received by women: “You get it”

Many viral trends come and go on social media. But very few trends have a massive impact and create long discussions. Recently, the question “man or bear?” has become one such topic that sparked a chain of discussions online. Although women and even some men claim that bears are less dangerous than men, some people disagree with this notion. Jobe Fortuna, a tarot enthusiast and satanist who goes by @bookofjobe666 on TikTok, shared his perspective on TikTok and women couldn't agree more.

Fortuna created this video in response to another content creator, Jonathan Buchanan (@john_cannon_),'s take on the “man or bear” debate. “But y'all act like men are scarier than bears. You don't watch enough nature documentaries, baby,” Buchanan criticized. Echoing Buchanan, Fortuna listed several reasons why women are justified in choosing bears over men. “There are no women's shelters that house women who have been attacked by bears. There are no support groups for women who have been attacked by bears,” Fortuna said, suggesting that women who have been attacked or abused by men, not bears, need emotional support. He then emphasized that mothers often teach their daughters to protect themselves from a man – not a bear.

Fortuna stressed that women need to go out in groups because they are afraid of men, not bears. When a woman walks home late at night, she fears not a bear attack, but an attack by a man. “Women are not afraid of a bear following them home. Women are not afraid of bears harassing them at work. Women are not afraid of bears slipping something into their drink,” Fortuna listed. “Need I go on?” he asked sarcastically. Outlining the cruel reality women face every day, Fortuna pointed out that it is fair for women to be more afraid of men than bears.

Just like Buchanan, many others found this “man or bear” trend to have a misogynistic attitude. Some people supported Buchanan's point of view and debated in the comments section. “You ignored that the question means the woman is just as exposed to the bear as the man. There would still be no bear support groups but only because they were all killed by the bear,” said @stuartwhunter. “You're a man so you think a woman would be safer in a room with a bear than with you? Sounds like you're speaking from experience,” criticized @gruffthecat.

Fortuna, however, received overwhelming support, especially from women, with many even adding more clues to his list. “The best and saddest reaction I've heard to this is, 'The worst thing a bear can do is kill me,'” @tooksbear noted. “I live where there are bears, cougars, and coyotes, and when I go hiking, I don't worry about them. I worry about a man finding me out there alone,” @craycraycristen added. “I never checked the backseat of my van for bears before getting in,” @erinoftwins123 noted. “Thank you! We need more male voices to recognize this,” @justcallmekimbo said.
