According to Denver police, a child was seriously injured in a car crash following a police chase.

At about 4 a.m. Sunday morning, paramedics were flagged down by a driver standing next to his vehicle near East 45th Avenue and North Peoria Street, according to a police department news release. When paramedics stopped, the man drove away.

Paramedics noticed possible gunshot damage to the driver's side window of the car and contacted Denver police, the release said. Officers pursued the car to Pecos Street and Interstate 76 in Adams County before performing a stop maneuver that caused a crash.

The driver fled on foot and the six passengers were taken to the hospital. A child who was not wearing a seat belt suffered serious injuries in the crash. A woman suffered an arm injury sustained in an alleged assault that occurred before the chase near East 17th Avenue and Alton Street in Aurora. The four other passengers were not seriously injured, according to police.

The driver of the car stated that someone from the earlier attack allegedly fired a weapon at his vehicle, the release said. Denver and Aurora police departments are investigating the alleged attack.
