Man dies after argument over parking leads to self-defense shooting, Phoenix police say

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man is dead after an argument led to a shooting in north Phoenix, and police say the gunman fired in self-defense.

It happened on Saturday night around 9:20 p.m. Phoenix police were called to a shooting near 27th Avenue and Beardsley Road. Officers arrived and arrested a man who was carrying a gun.

Another man, identified as 32-year-old Alejandro Samplina, was found on the ground in the parking lot. Samplina was taken to the hospital where he later died.

According to police, Samplina and the shooter got into an argument over parking. Samplina then pulled out a knife and chased the man around his car.

The man then grabbed a gun from the open door of his vehicle. According to police, Samplina approached the man with the knife in a threatening manner and then the man fired his gun, striking Samplina.

Investigators interviewed the man, who claimed self-defense. Police say that statement is consistent with witness statements and surveillance video.

The man was released after the investigation was completed.

Phoenix police said the charges would be forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review.
