VPD makes arrest in South Fry Street shooting investigation

VALDOSTA – Valdosta police arrested a 62-year-old Valdosta man on charges of aggravated assault following an investigation into a shooting.

Arrested: Harviere Tarpley, African American, 62 years old, resident of Valdosta

On Sunday, June 9, 2024, at approximately 5:50 p.m., Valdosta Police officers responded to an address in the 400 block of South Fry Street after a citizen called 911 to report a shooting. When officers arrived at the business, they found a 53-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the arm. South Georgia Medical Center EMS arrived and transported the victim to the hospital for treatment.

Detectives and forensic investigators responded and began investigating the incident.

Through witness statements and surveillance video in the area, investigators identified 62-year-old Harviere Tarpley as the perpetrator. The investigation revealed that Tarpley went behind a store, exposed himself, and then began urinating. When the victim asked him to stop and leave the area, Tarpley pulled out a firearm and shot him.

On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, detectives obtained arrest warrants for Tarpley for:

Aggravated assault – crime;
Possession of a firearm during the commission of a serious crime; and
Causing a public nuisance – misdemeanor.

After detectives obtained arrest warrants, they found Tarpley at his residence. He was arrested without incident and taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

The victim was treated and released from the hospital.

Further charges are being brought against Tarpley.

“This offender's callous act of violence against someone he did not know is senseless. I am proud of the quick work of our investigators in tracking him down and taking him into custody,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan.
