A Google Lens Searching for the keyframes of the viral footage of Joe Biden led us to a YouTube video by KBAK – KBFX – Eyewitness News – BakersfieldNowdated October 18, 2011. It showed images similar to the video clip and said: “Was legendary actor and singer Harry Belafonte asleep during a live satellite interview with Eyewitness News Friday morning? His press agent says no.”

By comparing the keyframes of the YouTube video with the viral footage, we were able to conclude that the clip showing Biden falling asleep on air was digitally manipulated.

A detailed description of the incident Yahoo Entertainment The article stated: “A video of Harry Belafonte appearing to fall asleep during a live TV interview with US broadcast Eyewitness News has gone viral on the internet. The two-minute clip shows the singer, best known for his song 'Banana Boat', appearing on the show to promote his new memoir. However, when the KBAK news anchor video-linked to him in New York, he appeared to be fast asleep and did not respond to the anchor's desperate attempts to wake him.”

However, Belafonte's spokesman had said there was a technical glitch. “After weeks of literally hundreds of interviews to promote his HBO documentary, memoir and CD, Mr. Belafonte had an early morning satellite TV tour… As expected, there was a technical glitch in the transmission to a local station in Bakersfield, California. His earpiece was not working, so he decided to take the time to meditate before starting the rest of his Day-O.” Ken Sunshine was reported by CBS News.
