Crime in Chicago: Teenager seriously injured, 5 others injured in shooting in West Humboldt Park on Pulaski Road, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) — On Monday night, a social gathering in the northwest of the city escalated into violence.

It started Sunday evening when young people gathered on the street near Pulaski and Iowa in Humboldt Park.

A video shows hundreds of people crowding into a nearby Shell gas station.

Employees said they had locked the doors due to the crowds.

As the crowd continued to grow, gunfire broke out at around 12:46 a.m., according to police.

Surveillance videos show people ducking behind cars to avoid the gunfire.

At least one other person at the gathering had a weapon.

The youngest victim was a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the neck and taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition, police said.

“People are trying to find out which hospital their friends and relatives were taken to. There were ambulances everywhere,” said crisis worker Pastor Donovan Price.

An 18-year-old woman was shot in the back, a 19-year-old woman was shot in the arm, a 25-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the buttocks and a 35-year-old man was shot in the foot. All were taken to hospital and are in fair condition, police said.

Price described the chaotic scene, saying people's belongings were flying through the air in sheer panic.

A 33-year-old woman broke her ankle in the chaos and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A gas station employee said they called the police for help seven times, adding that it is common for young people to gather in the area on weekends.

On Monday alone, according to Chicago police, at least 24 people were shot, two of them fatally.

Seven people were also shot near 60th Street and Winchester in West Englewood.

These victims were also in their twenties and thirties.

From Friday evening to Monday morning, at least 71 people were shot in gun violence across Chicago, nine of them fatally, the CPD said.

No one is in custody in any of these mass shootings. CPD detectives are continuing their investigation.
