Sabrina Carpenter on the viral success of “Espresso”

Sabrina Carpenter loves that people like her “nonsense.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone Released on Monday, June 17, the 25-year-old pop star talked about how her song “Espresso” became a huge hit.

“My mom asked, 'Are you feeling crazy right now?'” Carpenter said of the song in the release. “I just love that people understand my sense of humor.”

She told the publication that she was inspired by a visit to a crêperie while in France. The song's chorus is incredibly catchy, and she still stands by it unconditionally.

“I decided to pass this burden on to other people,” Carpenter joked.

She also talked about how working with songwriters Steph Jones and Amy Allen and producer Julian Bunetta inspired the quotable song.

“That's the only way to create these borderline idiotic, even downright funny lyrics,” Carpenter said of working with her collaborators. “I really focused on the people I like to make music with.”

In the story, Jack Antonoff, who collaborated with “Please Please Please” and also produced half of their upcoming album, Short and sweet – praised her approach to pop music.

“The way she expresses things makes me immediately empathize with her,” he said. “And [for] Anyone who has seen her live, let alone recorded her, knows she is an incredible singer. When you are in the presence of a voice like that, you just want to capture it.”
